Apple might push the independent operating system – SiriOS next year, against Amazon and Google assistants

According to foreign media reports, investment company Mangrove said in its recent report “Voice Tech 2019” that Apple will launch a new operating system, SiriOS, on WWDC 2020.

It is said that SiriOS will be independent of iOS, macOS and other operating platforms. This will get rid of the limitations of these platforms. At the same time, SiriOS will allow new features to be updated simultaneously on multiple devices without having to optimize for different systems.

According to the report, Apple introduced SiriOS to more actively promote the application of its Siri ecosystem on the device. This means that Siri may be open to more developers and third-party integration. However, the report does not disclose any special design or features of SiriOS.

“Voice Tech 2019” is the latest 2019 voice technology report launched by investment company Mangrove. The company reports on the development of voice technology and related predictions in 2019

SiriOS will be launched on WWDC 2020.

Before 2019, Apple had four major operating systems: macOS, iOS, watchOS and tvOS,. The Operating systems were designed for MacBook laptops and Mac desktops, iPhone and iPad tablets, Apple Watch and Apple TV respectively.

This year’s iPad tablet also got a separate operating system, ipadOS. However, the company seems to have no intention of limiting the operating system ecosystem to hardware devices. It is reported that a new operating system may be designed specifically for the company’s voice assistant – Siri.

The new operating system is called SiriOS. The investment company Mangrove hints at its existence in the latest 2019 speech technology report “Voice Tech 2019.”

According to the report, Apple may introduce SiriOS at its WWDC 2020 conference to more actively promote the application of its Siri ecosystem on devices. The devices supported by Siri can also be seamlessly connected to some extent.

It’s hard to say what changes will be made to the new operating system and how to strengthen its ecosystem. However, this means that Siri may be open to more developers and third-party integration(s). This will also indirectly make it a competitor to Amazon’s Alexa Skills, which is also open to developers.

“Apple is less effective in building an ecosystem around voice. With its vision of the ‘Knowledge Navigator‘, Apple’s voice strategy was clearer in 1987 than it is now. The voice community wants Apple to be its developer at WWDC 2020. Launching SiriOS, which will accelerate innovation and applications,” the report adds.

An independent operating system

SiriOS will not be included in existing operating systems such as iOS or MacOS. The OS will be a standalone platform. This will allow Siri to get rid of the limitations of iOS or macOS platforms, which is equivalent to Alexa or Google Assistant.

As a stand-alone operating system, SiriOS allows simultaneous update of new features on multiple devices without the need to optimize for different systems. This ensures cross-platform use of application functionality within the Apple ecosystem. SiriOS also allows third-party developers to integrate applications deeper into Siri.

In addition, SiriOS may also make Apple’s smart speaker HomePod more “smart”. Due to the limited Siri, HomePod is still relatively limited. It’s a lot behind Amazon Echo and Google Home.

But in the end, whether Apple will launch SiriOS will depend on whether Apple is willing to give control of its iconic virtual assistant to a third party.

Conclusion: SiriOS wants to share a “voice economy”

Although Apple is not sure whether to launch SiriOS on WWDC 2020, Apple does need to put in more effort in the voice field.

AI-based intelligent voice technology has developed rapidly in recent years. The technology has been able to achieve voice recognition accuracy of up to 95%. This is already comparable to humans. In the future, there will be more products and applications based on intelligent voice technology.

Amazon, Google and other giants have been re-injecting in the field of intelligent voice, from software to hardware. Although Apple also has Siri and its own smart speaker HomePod,  it is still unable to achieve the results of Amazon and Google.

Whether it is for the sake of its own ecological construction, or for the competition between the giants, the launch of SiriOS or similar products is imperative.
